The Kathakali (8x12 Giclée Print)
Medium
Archival quality Giclée print on Hahnemühle fine art paper.
About this work
Kathakali is a traditional form of performance art where the artists wear vibrant makeup, adorn intricately designed outfits and use music and dance to tell stories. It’s widely practiced in Kerala and shares traits with other traditional dance forms across the world like the Bugaku court dance seen in Japan. I became a big fan of Moorish tile patterns when I first got to see them in their full splendor at the Alcazar in Seville a few years ago. Ever since then, the idea of infusing that design aesthetic into my work has been on the back burner. This piece is a step in that direction. Didn’t realize this when I began this project but these two design choices are apt for this piece considering Kerala is one of those Indian states with a rich heritage of both Hindu and Islamic culture.
